Autumn Newsletter: Year 5/6

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to school after what I hope was a lovely summer holiday! After a long six weeks of looking forward to meeting the class, I have had a wonderful first week and am overjoyed with the fantastic group of children I have been given! I am not the only new member of the class, however, and would like to extend a warm welcome to our new families.

We have settled in very well as a class, and have set off at an excellent pace with a lot of hard work already. Working alongside me this term is Mrs Evans, who knows the children very well and has provided a sense of continuity and familiarity.

Our first topic this term is ‘Scream Machine’, which has a science focus and is centred on the stimulus of roller coasters. The children will learn about the forces involved in the movement of machines, along with mechanisms and data handling. We will also be conducting research and scientific experiments in the area, and will be writing creative shape poetry to express our learning.

After half term, our topic will be ‘Off with her Head’ which has a history focus and will inspire the children through learning about the juicy history of the Tudors and their monarchy. We will be focusing on non-fiction, persuasive, and journalistic writing during this topic, where children will learn research and presentation skills.

Other information

P.E sessions will be on a Wednesday afternoon, so please could children bring in kit for indoors and outdoors as we will try to get as much fresh air as possible!

Reading books will be organised shortly, please could these be taken home and returned to school every day, as it is very important that we encourage daily reading both in and out of school. It would be very beneficial if all children were encouraged to read to someone at home every evening.

Spellings and Times Tables tests will take place every Friday, and these will be distributed shortly for children to practice at home.

Please feel free to speak to me about your child’s progress, or any issues or concerns, after school. It is important that we have good communication to ensure your child is getting the best support possible.

The Criw Cymraeg have requested that every class have a ‘take home mascot’ to write about their week/weekend in Welsh as a homework project. Our class mascot ‘Benja’ will be sent home on a Wednesday to be returned on a Monday, then will go on another holiday with another child. This makes sure that everyone will have a turn with Benja, however it’s important that Benja is returned on the correct days. The homework must be completed within a week of having Benja, and is online only. If you do not have access to the internet at home, please come and see me.

Children will be required to write about their week/weekend with Benja on J2e (through HWB).

They will need to take photos to insert into their J2e document, and can record sound clips if they are more confident speaking Welsh than writing it. You will need to download the free app ‘J2Launch’ to record sound, and to upload images easily from a mobile phone or tablet.  When children have finished their writing and inserted some pictures of their holiday with Benja, they need to save their work and then click on the ‘world’ icon, which will submit it.

The children know how to access J2e, but if you have any questions or would like some support, please let me know.

I look forward to seeing what Benja and the children get up to on their travels!

Thank you,

Miss Hollands
