Autumn Newsletter: Year 3/4

Welcome back to school! I hope you’ve all had an enjoyable holiday. I am thrilled to be teaching year 3/4 this year, and am really looking forward to getting to know all of the children! We’re going to have a great year!

Our topics this term are Sensoria and Gods and Gladiators.

Sensoria has a science focus and teaches children about light and sound and how they travel. At the heart of this project children learn how to write poems on the theme of light and sound and learn additional skills in scientific recording and explanation writing.

This project has a history focus and teaches children about the significance of the Romans, who they were, where they came from and their impact on the Celt population of Wales and Britain. At the heart of this project the children learn how to write narrative stories with an historical setting and develop additional skills in persuasion and letter writing.

Class reminders

PE is on Tuesday, please remember to bring kit for indoors and outdoors as we’ll try and get outside as much as possible!

Reading books need to be brought to school every day and taken home at the end of each day. Reading is one of the best things you can do at home, so make sure you read to someone regularly!

Spelling and times tables tests are on Friday mornings, you will have a copy of your spelling words sent home next week.

Criw Cymraeg have requested that every class have a ‘take home mascot’ to write about their week/weekend in Welsh as a homework project. Our class mascot Babs, will be sent home with a child on Wednesday to be returned on Monday. The homework must be completed within a week of having Babs, and is online only. If you do not have access to the internet at home, please come and see me.

Children will be required to write about their week/weekend with Babs on J2e (through HWB). There is a folder already created in ‘Shared files’ on their J2e account that has some information about the language that needs to be used in their writing.

They can take photos to insert into their J2e document, and can record sound clips if they are more confident speaking Welsh rather than writing it. You will need to download the free app ‘J2Launch’ to record sound, and to upload images easily from a mobile phone or tablet.

When children have finished their writing and inserted some pictures of their holiday with Babs, they need to save their work and then click on the ‘world’ icon, which will submit it. I will then post it to our school blog once I have checked it with them in school. Children can also use any of the other J2e tools to enhance their work, just remember to click the ‘world’ icon to submit it. Your child’s work will then appear on our school blog, which is going to be an online diary of Babs’ travels.

You can reach our blog by using the following link: or through J2e by clicking on ‘J2Webby’.

The children know how to access J2e, but if you have any questions or would like me to show you, then please let me know.

I can’t wait to see what Babs experiences on her travels; make them interesting!

Please feel free to speak to me any afternoon after the children have been dismissed, if you should have any questions or concerns, or just want a chat about your child’s progress!

Thank you,

Miss Webster
